Calyx krater with red-figure decoration

Workshops in Falerii in the early 4th century BC featured a number of talented red-figure painters. This krater is the work of the Nazzano Painter, one of the most brilliant artists of the Faliscan school, noted for his large vases decorated with mythological or epic scenes. Here, Athena and Poseidon, the protagonists in the struggle for the possession of Athens, are are shown among a company of gods and heros. On the reverse, a Maenad is flanked by two satyrs.

The Lillebonne Apollo

Discovered in 1823, near the ancient theater in Lillebonne, this is the largest bronze statue of a deity to have survived from ancient Gaul. Apollo, considered a beneficent god, held a lyre in his left hand - a configuration that was particularly favored in northern and central-eastern Gaul. The proportions and balance of the figure, and the way the hair is arranged, testify to the strong influence of Greek forms from the fourth century BC on Gallo-Roman artists.

Apollo and Marsyas

For the lid decoration of this lekanis, Asteas chose a theme rarely depicted on objects of this type: the musical contest between Apollo and Marsyas. Marsyas, the satyr of Phrygia, was supposed to have invented the double flute (aulos). Proud of his discovery and the sonorous tone of his instrument, he challenged Apollo, thinking himself better on his flute than the god on his lyre. But Marsyas lost and Apollo hung him from a tree and skinned him alive. The composition is played out in frieze around the lid. A small white building is probably meant to represent a sanctuary; sprigs of laurel, the tree emblematic of Apollo, fill the decorative space. Apollo and Marsyas are seated on rocks, each playing his respective instrument. Marsyas wears an animal skin and ankle boots. Apollo, richly garbed in a decorated long-sleeved tunic and himation, plays the cither. The adversaries are accompanied by three muses posing gracefully on the rocks and holding various objects. The muse seated nearest to the god plays a cither, another makes ready to open a box, and the third holds a lyre. They wear chitons and himations and are adorned with jewelry. These female figures correspond to the general depiction of the female sphere found on this type of toilet accessory.

On the body, wedding procession

This is the earliest and most complete known representation of an Attic wedding. The bridal couple with the best man behind them sit in a cart drawn by two donkeys. A mule cart with four guests follows. Other members of the procession are on foot. The woman in the lead holds two torches, indicating that the scene takes place at night. The procession heads toward the bridegroom's house where a woman, probably the mother of the groom, awaits. The architecture of the house is carefully indicated; the white columns of the porch may be painted wood.

Youths with lyre and double flutes

The vase is in the form of the head of a lamb, and the artists have taken great pains to render the short, tightly curled wool, the projecting ears and undeveloped horns, and especially the beautiful large eyes. The scene of the cuff may well depict youths at school. One must wonder whether the combination of a lamb and schoolboys is intentional.

The seated man is identifiable as a poet through the lyre in his left hand and the inscription Egeas in the exergue. Although the name is not otherwise attested in this form, it may refer to Agias, or Hegias, of Troizen, mentioned in ancient literature as the author of the Nostoi, a poem now lost that narrated the return from Troy of various Greek heroes. On the exterior of the cup, the column and aryballos (oil flask) situate the scene in the gymnasium.

Description
Woman seated with lyre

The presence of a bird, evidently listening raptly, and the emphatically large chair as well as the frontal face suggest that the subject here is more than an Athenian lady making music. It is difficult to tell whether she should be thought of as an inspired mortal, a poetess, or a muse.

Description
Youths with lyre and double flutes

The vase is in the form of the head of a lamb, and the artists have taken great pains to render the short, tightly curled wool, the projecting ears and undeveloped horns, and especially the beautiful large eyes. The scene of the cuff may well depict youths at school. One must wonder whether the combination of a lamb and schoolboys is intentional.

Description
Erotes, Athena, Nike, and lyre-players

During the third century B.C., Tarentum fell under the hegemony of Rome. It was directly involved in the conflicts between Rome and the Carthaginians under Hannibal until finally losing its sovereignty to Rome in 209 B.C. The changed cultural environment affected artistic production. One innovation is represented by vases such as these, built up of various sections, decorated with subjects in relief, and brightly painted.

Description
Though simply executed, the figure is ornamented with ear caps, earrings, and two necklaces. In her left arm, now broken away, she may have held a lyre.
